Many people don’t think about ice fishing as a sport, or even a way to catch fish for the table. This hobby is becoming more and more popular, especially over the last few years. This can even produce bigger and better catches than in the summer months. The basics of the sport are fairly simple. Find a frozen lake, cut a hole in the ice and start to fish. What is important is making sure you are prepared beforehand. Being winter you need good supplies, the right clothing, shelter, and something to sit on and make sure the ice is the right thickness to perform this activity. Ice fishing is very popular in countries with long or harsh winters like Iceland, Norway and Russia but is also very popular in America. This sport makes for an excellent vacation opportunity. Once you have decided where to go you need to make sure everything is in order, a tool for making the hole, usually a pick, a saw or chisel for making the hole larger once your through ice, then you will need gear to make the experience a pleasurable one, not an uncomfortable one. A chair to sit on and maybe an umbrella or small tent to shelter from the harsh winds. Ice should be between 5 and 8 inches deep to ensure it will support the weight of you and your gear. When going on an ice fishing trip it is always a good idea to check either with the locals, people already fishing or the bait shop as to what type of fish is being caught, the type of bait being used and any other techniques or tips they could help you with.
